DAMASCUS (IRNA) – Iran-Syria Joint Economic Commission meeting co-chaired by Iran's Minister of Housing and Urban Development Mohammad Saeedikia and Syrian Minister of Economy and Commerce Amir Husni Lutfi began here on Sunday.

At the meeting, the Syrian minister called for benefiting from Iran's successful experience in various economic fields.

There are huge untapped economic potentials in the two countries which should be further explored, he said, adding that in recent years only some minor parts of it have been explored.

Extensive and very stiff economic competition along with efforts by some to create obstacles to expansion of mutual cooperation between the two countries are among the reasons why the two sides should further bolster and broaden all-out cooperation, he pointed out.

The Iranian minister, who is heading a senior economic delegation, voiced Iran's readiness to extend further services to Syrian industrial and agricultural sectors.

Expert committee meetings between Iran and Syria can result in the conclusion of a number of memoranda of understanding (MOU) on plant protection and environment as well as preferential trade accords by traders and businessmen of both states, he said.

Iranian businessmen are now involved in the construction of an abattoir, a dairy plant and a pasteurized milk factory as well as the promotion of animal husbandry, construction of bridges and roads, expansion of ports and power plants, manufacture of mirror and glasses, development of petrochemical plants in Syria, said Saeedikia.

Iran-Syria Joint Economic Commission meeting is to prepare grounds for inking more MOU at the upcoming Supreme Economic Committee session of the two countries.

The annual Supreme Economic Committee meeting is to be co-chaired on Wednesday by Iran's first VP Parviz Davudi and his Syrian counterpart.

Iran's minister of housing and urban development will return home but expert committees would follow up its responsibility to finalize agreements and MOU's between the two countries prior to Wednesday's meeting.
